Man charged with handbag stealing in Devonport, TAS

Police have charged a 25-year-old Devonport man after a handbag snatching incident in Devonport last night, Tasmania Police say.

Around 7pm a woman walking on Edward Street was approached by a man wearing a grey and black coloured hooded jumper, light coloured jeans and dark shoes with white soles.

The man snatched the woman’s handbag and was chased by a number of witnesses.

The handbag and contents were later recovered after being discarded by the offender.

No one was injured during the incident.

"Following public information and a subsequent investigation, police located and charged a 25-year-old Devonport man with the stealing. He will appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court at a later date," said Detective Acting Sergeant Michelle Elmer

Police would like to speak to anyone who observed a man acting suspiciously in the vicinity of Edward Street or Fenton Street around 7pm last night, particularly the man who was riding a bike and assisted with the recovery of the handbag.
