Man Charged With Murder in Villawood Detainee Death

Detectives have charged a man with murder following the death of a detainee at a detention centre in Sydney's south west.

About 6.35am yesterday (Sunday 11 January 2026), emergency services were called to a detention centre on Birmingham Avenue, Villawood, following reports of the death of a male detainee.

Officers attached to Bankstown Police Area Command attended and located the body of a 51-year-old man suffering a serious wound.

A crime scene was established and an investigation under Strike Force Keota commenced, with the assistance of the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad and the Australian Federal Police.

Following inquiries, another detainee – a 29-year-old man – was arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today (Monday 12 January 2026).

Investigations under Strike Force Keota continue.
