Man charged with robbery after citizen's arrest in Ultimo

A man has been charged after being tackled by a good Samaritan after allegedly committing a street robbery at Ultimo.

About 9.30pm yesterday (Sunday 20 January 2019), a 22-year-old woman was on Bay Road when she was approached by a 45-year-old man, who snatched the woman's mobile phone from her hand after a struggle.

The victim began yelling for help, which alerted some witnesses.

A 26-year-old woman ran to assist the victim and tackled the man to the ground. He was then restrained by the woman and her two friends until police arrived.

The man was taken to Day Street Police Station. He allegedly defecated in the police caged vehicle on the way.

The man was charged with steal from person, malicious damage, and goods in custody.

He was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Monday 21 January 2019).
