Man drowns - Suffolk Park, near Byron Bay, NSW

A report is being prepared for the Coroner after a man drowned in the state’s far north today, NSW Police say.

Just before 12.30pm (Wednesday 13 December 2017), emergency services were called to the beach at Suffolk Park, south of Byron Bay, following reports of a man in trouble in the water.

The man, a 21-year-old from Brisbane, was found face down in the water.

A witness commenced CPR until NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived, but the man died at the scene.

Officers from Tweed Byron Local Area Command have commenced investigations into the incident.

The incident is a timely reminder for swimmers to make safety the priority when in, on or around the water this summer.

Authorities advise the following tips for keeping safe at the beach:

* Always swim between the red and yellow flags

* Read and observe the safety signs

* Ask a lifesaver/lifeguard for safety advice

* Always swim with someone else and look out for each other

* Always supervise children around the water

* Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs

* Learn how to identify a rip

* If you need help, stay calm and attract attention

* Always wear a lifejacket while boating or rock-fishing

* If witnessing an in-water emergency, call Triple Zero (000) for police
