Man Extradited for Multimillion Ghost Cars Fraud

Financial Crimes Squad detectives have extradited and charged a sixth person for their alleged role in a multimillion-dollar financing fraud using 'ghost cars' to target a Sydney automotive group.

In January 2024, detectives attached to State Crime Command's Financial Crimes Squad – with assistance from the NSW Crime Commission – launched an investigation into a criminal syndicate targeting Sydney automotive financing companies under Strike Force Myddleton.

The investigation found that the syndicate were allegedly using the stolen personal information of more than 33 people to apply for loans through various financial companies to purchase luxury 'ghost cars' that did not exist.

The total funds stolen through the alleged fraudulent scheme is estimated to be $10 million.

Five people have previously been charged and remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries, about 3.45pm on Tuesday 20 May 2025, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Southport on the Gold Coast with assistance from Queensland Police.

Strike force detectives then travelled to the Gold Coast, where they applied for – and were granted – the man's extradition to NSW yesterday (Thursday 22 May 2025).

The man landed in Sydney about 12.50pm and was taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with 15 offences including 12 counts of recklessly deal proceeds general crime intend to conceal and three counts of recklessly deal with proceeds of crime >$5000.

He was refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court today (Friday 23 May 2025).

Police will allege in court the man recklessly dealt with proceeds of crime in excess of $3.6 million.

Investigations under Strike Force Myddleton continue.
