Man in custody following Swanston Street crash

A man is under police guard in hospital following a series of incidents this morning, Victoria Police say.

It is alleged a 36-year-old Ballarat man entered a home on Marine Parade, St Kilda about 5.30am.

When the owner woke to find the man inside the home, he left the premises on foot.

The man then allegedly stole a black Holden Rodeo from a service station on Barkly Street, St Kilda about 6.25am.

It is alleged the stolen vehicle was travelling north along Swanston Street about 6.40am when it crashed into a pole.

Investigators believe the impact caused the utility to flip and slide up Swanston Street where it came to rest on the tram tracks at the intersection of Swanston and Bourke Streets.

The driver fled the scene on foot and was located by police a short time later at Southern Cross Station.

He was conveyed to hospital and will be conveyed to St Kilda Police Station for further questioning.

The man will face an out of sessions court hearing later today in relation to aggravated burglary, theft of motor vehicle and reckless conduct endangering life charges.
