Part of Masons Road in Mernda will be reduced to one-way traffic only as part of a six-month trial to reduce safety risks to motorists and residents.
An advisory Committee of the Mayor and North Ward Councillors considered a number of submissions made by residents and emergency services.
At the 1 October Council meeting councillors agreed to a recommendation to make traffic on Masons Road one-way only eastbound between Epping Road and Wilkes Court as a trial.
Residents of Masons Road have been lobbying the Council to take action to address safety and dust concerns.
Mayor Lawrie Cox said Council explored many options for the road and consulted with residents including those who live on Masons Road and Wilkes Court.
"Masons Road had become a popular rat-run for residents wanting to bypass Bridge Inn Road with up to 850 cars using it each day," Cr Cox said.
"The road was originally built as a gravel road to provide local farm access, it was never designed to take the level of traffic that it now does and as a result the quality has deteriorated.
"We explored a variety of options from closing the road totally which was supported by over 70% of submissions made as against options to seal and/or upgrading the road.
"Sealing the road was going to be a very expensive option not realistically available to Council and would likely increase through traffic so we feel the one-way option is the best solution for now."
Cr Cox thanked residents who had their say during the consultation period.
"The feedback helped Council make an informed decision," he said.
Residents will be informed when the trial is due to start.
