Mathoura History Group Kicks Off

Murray River Council

Mathoura's newest community group is already off to a strong start, with the first meeting of the Mathoura History Group held recently.

The group aims to bring people together to share, preserve and celebrate the town's unique history, and the first session drew an encouraging turnout.

Chatting over coffee and cake, the group's first session saw them collate old photos and articles of past events in Mathoura, which will eventually form displays in the local library.

Run as an initiative through Murray River Council's Mathoura Library program, organisers say they are keen to continue growing the group and welcome anyone with an interest in local history to come along.

"Mathoura has such a unique history, from our timber and river heritage to the many families who have called this place home for generations," Library Officer, Amanda Brown said.

"There are so many stories to tell, and it's wonderful to see the community come together to make sure they're not lost. We'd love to see even more faces next time"

Meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month at 1.30pm, Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre, with upcoming dates:

  • 13 October, 2025
  • 10 November, 2025
  • 8 December, 2025

Everyone is welcome, whether you've got a box of old photographs, family stories to share, or just a curiosity to learn more about Mathoura's past.

The group hopes to grow steadily, and with more members may explore more projects and events that celebrate key milestones in the town's story.

So, if you've got an interest in history, or simply a love for Mathoura, why not come along to the next meeting and be part of keeping the shared stories alive?
