Corangamite Shire Mayor Kate Makin has invited all Shire residents to share a barbecue and make new community connections at Council's Australia Day event in Camperdown.
"One of the great things about Corangamite has always been the strong sense of social connection and mutual support across our community.
"The annual Australia Day get-together is always a fantastic opportunity to get together with people from across the length and breadth of the Shire.
"Come along to the Theatre Royal and share a bite to eat, a soft drink, and socialise with old friends or someone you haven't met yet.
"Australia Day is a time for us to come together and reflect on the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunities we have, and the spirit of mateship that defines us as Australians."
Cr Makin said it was important to acknowledge that January 26 holds different meanings for different people.
"For many First Nations Australians, this date represents a day of mourning.
"Recognising that is an opportunity for all of us to listen, learn, and work towards reconciliation.
"Let's use this day not only to celebrate what makes Australia great, and walk together in a spirit of fairness, equality, and respect."
The event will start at 10 am and includes presentation of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year awards and a citizenship ceremony.
It will finish with a free community barbecue lunch for all, thanks to the Lions Club of Camperdown.
