Council's Sunshine Coast Stadium will come alive with demonstrations and information displays at the free Emergency Services Community Expo on Sunday, May 19 from 11am-3pm.
The fun family-friendly expo will allow the community to get up close and personal with emergency services personnel and their equipment, including the Queensland Police Service motorbikes, highway patrol vehicles and water police to learn more about the important role played by these agencies.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services will demonstrate their appliances and simulate a bush fire and kitchen fire.
The State Emergency Services will have a flood boat and truck available for the family to inspect and you can also see the inside of an ambulance.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Emergency Services Community Expo to be held in May was a joint initiative between Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Ambulance Services.
The community can also receive information on how to prepare for disasters.
"Council is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors to the region by working with all stakeholders involved in community safety," Mayor Jamieson said.
"This partnership is particularly important when the Sunshine Coast Disaster Management Group is activated.
"There is no doubt early education in promoting resilience against future disasters is key to building stronger communities.
"Safety education starts with our youngest community members.
"As part of its Get Ready Queensland program, council has developed an education program for school students to ensure young people are part of the conversation when it comes to disaster preparedness.
"Schools from across the region will be invited to enter the Sunshine Coast Get Ready schools competition, which will see children from across the Coast produce a short video that encourages the community to have a "What if Plan".
"We will be showcasing the top 10 finalists at the Expo which will see the winning school work with a professional marketing company to develop a Get Ready television, radio and social media campaign.
"I also encourage the community to visit council's Disaster Management team at the Expo to obtain tips on how to get ready and prepare for a disaster."
As part of the Emergency Services Community Expo, the community is invited to watch and cheer for the inter-service soccer competition with the finals happening between 3pm – 4pm on the day.
