Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller has won the Elected Official category at the NSW Women in Local Government Awards, while Council's Operational Facilities Manager Margaret Diebert was highly commended in the category of Women in non-traditional roles.
Mayor Waller said she was humbled to receive the award.
"I am incredibly proud to have my achievements at Liverpool City Council recognised with this award.
"Since I was first elected to Council in 1995, it's been my honour and my passion to represent the people of Liverpool," Mayor Waller said.
"The role has never been easy, but along with my colleagues on Council and dedicated staff, we have achieved so much."
Liverpool City Council Chief Executive Officer Kiersten Fishburn was thrilled to see Mayor Waller acknowledged with such a prestigious award.
"During a period of unprecedented growth, with multiple private and public stakeholders preparing to invest $15 billion in the LGA, it has always been Mayor Waller's aim to ensure the benefits of this growth are shared by the whole community, especially those who are most disadvantaged," Ms Fishburn said.
"I would also like to congratulate Margaret Diebert, who is doing wonderful work for Council.
"Margaret did an outstanding job as acting Director of City Presentation, advocating for staff, improving working conditions and mentoring other women in non-traditional roles."
Mayor Waller has worked successfully with Liberal State and Federal governments to:
- Bed down Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport;
- Secure major investments in roads and transport including commitments from the Federal and State governments to build an airport rail link by 2026;
- Begin attracting major overseas investors in the Aerotropolis;
- Sign the Western Sydney City Deal, guaranteeing local government a seat at the decision-making table in perpetuity; and
- Help achieve a NSW Government commitment for the $740 million upgrade of Liverpool Hospital.
"In the past year alone, Mayor Waller led Council's efforts to support the community during the Holsworthy bushfires in April 2018 and the Moorebank hail storm in December," Ms Fishburn said.
"In both events Wendy was quickly on the scene, meeting with affected residents and making sure emergency personnel were receiving all possible support from Council.
"When I look at Mayor Waller's achievements listed, it is clear just how deserving she is of this accolade. It is an immense pleasure to work with such a dedicated and passionate woman to achieve great things for Liverpool."
