Mayor Wendy Waller condemns recent anti-lockdown protests in Liverpool

Mayor of Liverpool Wendy Waller expressed her disappointment following yesterday's media reports highlighting a small number of people participating in anti-COVID-19 lockdown protests outside Council offices in Liverpool.

Mayor Waller said this wasn't an isolated incident in Liverpool, with almost 80 small anti-lockdown protests taking place across the state.

"These protests were an example of disgusting and selfish behaviour by a few individuals who have chosen to disobey and flaunt the law, putting community members at significant risk.

"We're all feeling the effects of this extended lockdown but I'm confident I speak on behalf of the majority of the Liverpool community, when I say these protests are not a solution."

Mayor Waller commended NSW Police for their swift action yesterday and said the actions of a minor few should not tarnish the good work Liverpool residents have put in so far.

"The vast majority of the Liverpool community are doing the right thing and adhering to the lockdown rules, and I am so proud of the resilience we are showing as a community.

"Liverpool is also one of the areas leading the charge in coming out and getting vaccinated and I applaud the community for taking this action as jabs in arms are the only way out of this difficult situation.

"I want to extend my deepest thanks to all the healthcare workers and frontline workers who face immeasurable challenges yet continue to put the lives and safety of others before their own. As you keep showing up to care for those who need it most, we will continue to stay home for you," Mayor Waller said.
