  • IAC facilitated key discussions on COVID-19 recovery
  • Opportunity for businesses to work together must be supported by Government
  • Labor has facilitated key discussions surrounding COVID-19 recovery with Tasmania's Minerals, Energy and Advanced Manufacturing industries at the sector's Industry Advisory Council meeting.

Shadow Primary Industries Minister, Shane Broad, said the Minerals, Energy and Advanced Manufacturing Industry Advisory Council (IAC) meeting was an important step towards planning for how the sector hopes to rebuild post COVID-19.

"Business supply chains have been disrupted by COVID-19 related freight issues and it is critical that we are planning for the recovery of the Minerals, Energy and Advanced Manufacturing now," Dr Broad said.

"The shutdown of international markets because of COVID-19 has prompted a rethink of the ways in which Tasmania can look more locally for manufacturing supply and employment.

"The IAC meeting highlighted that there is an opportunity for businesses to diversity and work together moving forward - but this interconnectedness should be driven by the Government.

"It's critical that businesses are aware of the capabilities of other Tasmanian operations so that they can look at local procurement or cooperation to limit expenditure during these difficult times ahead - for instance they may be able to share machinery instead of having to purchase separately.

"Labor is committed to working with the Minerals, Energy and Advanced Manufacturing industries to identify short, medium and long term solutions to support the growth of these industries."

    Shadow Minister for Primary Industries
