Missing Japanese tourist found in Tasmania mountain

A Japanese female tourist, who were missing on Cradle Mountain, northwest of Tasmania, has been found alive after a freezing-cold night in bush.

The 58 year old woman in a guided tour was staying at the Cradle Mountain Lodge, and went missing after going for a run and expected to be back in 45 minutes at 8pm Sunday, police say.

Tasmania Police activated the Westpac Police Rescue Helicopter about 9pm, which searched the area until the early hours of the morning.

The search resumed this morning with members of the State Emergency Service, Tasmania Police Search and Rescue and the helicopter.

The woman was located by the helicopter and picked up just before 9am.

Temperature in the area fell to just 1 degree Celsius overnight, with light snow and sleet.
