Another major road project has now been finalised in Bowral that will help make getting in and around Bowral much easier.

The reconstruction of the Mittagong Creek Bridge located on Merrigang Street has been completed and the road is now fully accessible to drivers. The project was wrapped up at the end of last week.

After nearly a century of faithful service, the bridge was beginning to show its age with some visible signs of wear and tear. One of the signs was the deck deflection when it was under load and cracks on the road surface that allowed moisture to seep in and damage the timber cross beams and corrode the steel girders.

Manager Project Delivery, Ned Tripkovic said. "We know the community will be very happy to have the much needed upgrades to the bridge completed, being a major thoroughfare for many locals and visitors"

"The bridge that was previously in place required extensive repairs and ultimately needed to be completely rebuilt. Taking on this significant project was no easy feat, but it has now been successfully completed" he said.

The recently constructed bridge maintains a similar width as the original, measuring 10.7 meters across. It provides two 3.5 metre lanes for vehicles and a widened and improved 2.5 metre footpath on one of its sides.

The previous bridge was substituted with a new one that fulfilled the requirements for all heavy-duty vehicles which the previous bridge did not. The surroundings of the bridge were also taken into account and the design of the structure incorporated elements that would safeguard the embankments from erosion and battering, both upstream and downstream. In addition, custom handrails were installed that complement the visual style of the old bridge.

The project, one of four bridges repaired or rebuilt in our Shire, cost just over $1.2million and was majority funded by the NSW Government, through the Fixing Country Bridges Grant program.
