Liverpool City Mayor Wendy Waller today welcomed the commencement of construction of Woolworths' two new distribution centres within the Moorebank Logistics Park.
"The distribution centres will create more than 1300 local construction jobs over the next four years," Mayor Waller said.
The Moorebank Logistics Park precinct covers an area of over 243 hectares. When completed, it will comprise of a dedicated freight rail line from Port Botany with onward connections to the national rail network.
Mayor Waller said on completion, the Moorebank facility will move 1.5 million shipping containers annually by rail instead of road. It is anticipated this could take more than 2600 heavy truck movements off Sydney's roads each day.
"This investment is a welcome boost to our local economy as we need more local jobs to help in the recovery phase after the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19 last year.
"We know the terminal is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week facility, which could potentially generate over 3000 jobs for local people and Council will work closely with training providers to ensure this comes to fruition.
"We want to harness every opportunity to promote more skilled jobs that could include a variety of areas including truck drivers, crane operators, warehouse managers, computer operators and warehouse trainees to name a few.
Mayor Waller said to support the operation of the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal there will be significant investment into the M5 Motorway – Moorebank Avenue/Hume Highway intersection upgrade.
"We want to build Sydney's Third CBD with access to high quality infrastructure that will meet the demands of our changing city for many generations to come," Mayor Waller said.
