More investment in Tuggeranong sporting facilities

Joint media release: Mick Gentleman, MLA and Joy Burch, MLA

Tuggeranong families are set to benefit from a joint ACT and Federal Labor commitment to an indoor sports facility in Canberra's south.

Local ACT Labor MLA Joy Burch said that joint funding of $6 million was a sign of Labor's commitment to providing better local sporting facilities to keep Tuggeranong residents active.

"I know many families in Tuggeranong are involved in sporting teams and competitions, and they really value our local sporting facilities", Joy Burch MLA said.

"Indoor facilities that provide year round access for sporting codes are perfect for Canberra, and it's great that our local Labor team have worked together to get joint funding for indoor facilities in Tuggeranong.

Federal Labor, through candidate for Bean David Smith and Opposition Spokesperson for Sports Don Farrell, and the ACT Government have been working with the Tuggeranong Netball Association on upgrades to the netball courts in Calwell. These upgrades including covering the outdoor courts, proving a year round indoor facility for many Tuggeranong families involved in the local netball competition.

"The netball association have provided the ACT Government with a proposal for a redevelopment of the current facilities in Calwell, and we'll work through the proposal with them and Netball ACT to provide a netball and multi-sports facility in Tuggeranong through this funding.

Brindabella MLA and ACT Labor member Mick Gentleman said the announcement highlights Federal Labor's commitment to the nation's capital and the ACT Government's commitment to Canberra's South.

"Over the past six years, Canberrans have experienced life under a federal Liberal Government – with job cuts, cuts to health, decentralisation and a lack of infrastructure funding for the Territory," Mick Gentleman said.

"Already we have seen a willingness from a Federal Labor Government to invest more in Canberra – providing funding commitments for public transport upgrades, more public health services and more support for our local sporting teams – including teams in my electorate of Brindabella."

"I look forward to working with a future Labor Government on ensuring these commitments are delivered for Canberrans here in Tuggeranong and across the city."
