More support for Queensland business event jobs

Extra funding is on the way to support jobs in Queensland's business events industry for the Palaszczuk Government's Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the second round of the National Business Events Program had opened today.

"We know how important conferences, conventions, exhibitions and corporate functions are to Queensland's tourism destinations and jobs in the State's business events industry," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"The first round of the National Business Events Program launched in March has secured 20 business events for Queensland with a total of 8,300 delegates and an expected $14 million for our Economic Recovery Plan."

Events supported by the first funding round include the 2021 National Property Conference, the 2021 Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society Conference and the 2021 Positive Schools Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference.

Mr Hinchliffe said the second round of the National Business Events Program would extend support for additional corporate and association conferences in Queensland to December 2022.

"Queenslanders have worked hard to manage the health impacts of the pandemic." Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Round two of our National Business Events Program is designed to give business the confidence to Zoom less and hold more face-to-face, Covid-safe conferences and conventions in Queensland.

"Business visitors often spend more in conference destinations and are likely to return with family for a holiday experience.

"That's what makes business travellers so important to tourism operators and helping Queensland's visitor destinations to rebuild better."

The National Business Events Program is aimed at national association or corporate events with more than 350 delegates staying at least two days.

Half of all delegates must be visiting from outside of the Local Government Area where the event is being held to qualify.

Program funding must be spent in Queensland to cover costs associated with event venue hire, accommodation, or ground transfers.
