Moreland Council will join the local community in celebration of International Women's Day 2020, through a range of fun events across the municipality this week.
Locals, artists and performers, and Moreland Councillors, Cr Natalie Abboud and Cr Helen Davidson will lead activities and discussion at Brunswick Library on Thursday 5th March from 6pm to 8pm, in honour of the valuable contributions of women to the Moreland community.
Officially celebrated 8th March, the theme for International Women's Day2020 is; I am Generation Equality: Realising Women's Rights.
Moreland City Libraries' celebrations will provide an opportunity for the community to participate in an array of interactive activities to identify and reflect on women's issues and aspirations that connect us over generations.
Activities include; podcasting of female voices with Emma Sharp of Stupid Old Studios; a creative workshop with musician Stella McCloskey promoting the importance of inclusivity within music; a look behind expectations and images in the digital age with visual artist Tyler Payne; a panel reflection and Q&A with Emma Sharp, Stella McCloskey, Tyler Payne and Fern Smith.
Moreland Mayor Cr Lambros Tapinos said the Council is strongly committed to ensuring its actions and services are inclusive, culturally safe and respectful for all gender, sexual and cultural identities.
"We're very proud to promote equality and inclusion in the Moreland community, and celebrate International Women's Day," said Cr Tapinos.
"We're activating the seven key areas of our Gender Equality Commitment through collaboration and community partnerships, to ensure everyone has the same opportunities to participate in community life."
"Some of the ways we're doing this is through community funding for projects that increase female participation, strategies to create inclusive community spaces, awards to commend community members leading positive social change, and advocating against gender-based violence and for safer communities. "
Join International Women's Day celebrations in Moreland across a number of activities including events at Brunswick Library, the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick, and community network events.
Community members are also encouraged to hold their own International Women's Day events.
