Mosman Art Prize 2020 winner

The 2020 Mosman Art Prize has been awarded to Sydney-based artist Salote Tawale for her acrylic on canvas titled Mangroves (2020).

Tawale was presented with the first place major prize of $50,000 by 2020 judge, acclaimed curator and Executive Director of Artspace in Sydney Alexie Glass-Kantor, at a small livestreamed ceremony at Mosman Art Gallery.

Mangroves now enters the celebrated Mosman Art Collection, where Tawale joins a roll call of luminaries and previous winners including Margaret Olley, Grace Cossington Smith, Lloyd Rees, Adam Cullen and Natasha Walsh.

Other awards presented to entrants were the Margaret Olley Commendation Award to Stieg Persson for Lido (2019), the Allan Gamble Award to Phil James for Landscape composition 1 (2020), and the Guy Warren Emerging Artists' Award to Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran for Ascension, with Hog and Alter Ego (2020).

The Prize is the oldest and most prestigious Council-run art prize in Australia, and entries form the basis of the Gallery's valuable and historic collection of modern and contemporary art.
