Motorcyclist caught speeding at more than 200kmh on Bass Highway, TAS

A 23 year old Bishopsbourne man will be charged with a number of offences including evading police after being detected travelling at more than 200km/h on the Bass Highway at Westbury, Tasmania Police say.

Police detected a black Honda CBR600 motor cycle travelling east on the highway at in excess of 200 km/h, whilst overtaking vehicles, while conducting mobile speed checks about 5.30pm yesterday.

Police allege the motorcyclist evaded police and later located the motor cycle abandoned at the Bishopsbourne Recreation Ground.  The rider was located nearby.

The rider will be charged with Evade Police and other traffic offences, and his motorcycle was seized by police for 6 months.

"The extremely high speed of the motor cycle is of great concern," Senior Sergeant Nick Clark said.

"Tasmania Police want to remind the community that the current "We’ve Been Everywhere" road safety campaign aims to encourage safe road use by promoting the high possibility of being caught if driving unsafely and the fact that road safety is everyone’s responsibility."

If anyone saw the motor cycle driving at speed or driving in an erratic manner in the area about 5.30pm yesterday, they are asked to contact the Northern Road and Public Order Services at Launceston Police Station on 67773925.   Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers.
