A 35 year old motorcyclist has been charged and had his bike seized after being caught travelling at nearly double the speed limit in Hobart last night, Tasmania Police say.
Police detected a motorcycle travelling at 158km/h on the Southern Outlet near the Summerleas Road exit ramp, Kingston. .
Acting Sergeant Drew Redburn said "This motorcyclist was travelling at 158kph in a signposted 80kph road, he was riding a high powered motorcycle, at almost twice the speed limit. Travelling at this speed not only placed his life, but also the lives of other road users in very real danger".
Police safely intercepted the rider, who was arrested, charged and bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date. His motorcycle has also been seized by police due to excessive speed.
"Police are disappointed with this kind of dangerous behaviour. Many of the fatalities so far this year have involved motorcyclists and this manner of riding is totally unacceptable. Motorists and motorcyclists need to take responsibility for their actions on our roads heading into the holiday period," Acting Sgt Redburn said.
Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a black motorcycle travelling at high speed on the Southern Outlet heading south around 9pm on Friday evening.
