A 19-year-old man from West Ulverstone was intercepted and arrested yesterday following a high speed detection on Dial Road, Penguin, Tasmania Police say.
Around 3.15pm on Tuesday 25th April (Anzac Day) police detected a motorbike on Dial Road, Penguin, travelling at 142km/h in a 50km/h zoned area. Police also observed the rider of the bike lifting the front wheel of the bike while travelling at around 100km/h.
He was charged with negligent driving, hooning offences and speeding and will face court on 13 June.
The motorbike was seized for a period of 28 days.
"So far this year, all five of the fatalities occurring on Tasmania’s roads have involved motorcyclists. This example of riding behaviour is beyond belief," said Senior Sergeant Tony Stewart.
"In this instance, at that speed the rider’s ability to react to any change in the environment around him would have been reduced to zero.
"If this bike rider had been involved in a crash he would almost certainly would have been killed.
"Regardless of how good a rider someone thinks they may be, they do not control the environment around them.
"This is an example of irresponsible behaviour with little regard for their own safety or the safety of those around him."
Police urge all motorbike riders on the road to be constantly aware of their own vulnerability. The nature of bikes is, unlike cars, they provided no protection from an impact, as such, even low level crashes ultimately result in injury.
