A motorcyclist just two months into his learner permit has had his bike impounded after being clocked more than 50km/h over the speed limit in Mount Waverley yesterday.

Officers from the Transit Safety Division were travelling along the Monash Freeway when they spotted the motorcycle travelling at excessive speed about 4am.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 was allegedly detected travelling at 153km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The rider was intercepted, allegedly making admissions that he thought it was safe due to the amount of traffic at the time.

The 20-year-old Mount Waverley man had his license suspended for a period of 12 months and is expected to be charged on summons.

His motorcycle was impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $1,014.
