Motorist Warning Regarding Fuel Spills, TAS

Police are reminding motorists to secure all items on their vehicles following a serious fuel spill in Cambridge this morning which caused several crashes, Tasmania Police say.

At around 7am police were alerted to a serious fuel spill on Holyman Avenue at Cambridge which was causing vehicles to lose traction around the first roundabout near the BP service station.

A black Holden crashed at the scene and the 30-year-old female driver was treated by Ambulance Tasmania.

Shortly after a yellow Aprilia motorcycle lost steering and slid off the road. The 40-year-old female pillion passenger was transported by Ambulance Tasmania to the Royal Hobart Hospital with suspected ankle injuries.

Investigations revealed that the driver of a white Ford Ranger utility had filled an external fuel tank at the local BP and failed to secure the cap of the drum causing several litres of diesel to spill onto the roadway.

As a result of a combined investigation involving investigators from Tasmania Police and Hobart Airport, a 38-year-old contractor from the Tasman Peninsula is assisting police with their enquiries.

This incident highlights the dangers involved in making simple errors in judgement which have a strong impact on others.

In this incident alone there was serious injury to a motorcyclist, damage to two vehicles, three hours of road clean-up by road workers and Airport staff.
