Motorists nabbed as part of Operation Safe Hills, SA

Police have reported a total of 12 speeding motorists as a part of an undercover operation on Mt Barker Road at Leawood Gardens this morning, according to SA Police.

Between 9am and 1pm on Sunday 12 November, police conducted covert speed detection duties on the old freeway - Mt Barker Road as a part of Operation Safe Hills.

Police were targeting speeding vehicles and dangerous driving behaviour as part of the ongoing operation and recent complaints the area is used as a race track.

During the operation seven cars and five motorcycles were detected exceeding the 60 km/h speed limit.

Two motorcyclists were reported after being detected travelling at 45 km/h or more over the speed limit. A 33-year-old man from Fullarton was reported after travelling at 115km/h, while a 31-year-old man from Strathalbyn was stopped doing 109km/h. Both men were issued expiation notices and immediate loss of licence of six months.

Another motorcycle rider was issued with two fines, after being stopped twice in two minutes at 77km/h and then a second time of 94km/h.

Of concern is that all drivers that were stopped speeding, were detected within 200 metres from the scene of a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on the 10 June 2017.

The State's road toll currently stands at 86, which was the total for the whole of 2016. While 19 motorcyclists have died on our roads compared to six over the same period last year.
