Motorists urged to drive safely, NSW

NSW Police are reminding road users to drive safely and take extra care after Day Two of Operation Go Slow, NSW Police say.

Operation ‘Go Slow,’ commenced at 12.01am on Friday 21 April 2017 and continues until 11.59pm on Tuesday (25 April 2017). Double demerits will be enforced throughout the period for speeding, mobile phones, seatbelt, and motorcycle-helmet offences.

Officers continue their highly-visible presence on the roads during the operation, targeting speeding, mobile phone use, alcohol and drug-affected drivers, fatigue, and seatbelt use.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said ultimately it is up to those behind the wheel, to drive safely to keep themselves and other road users safe.

"Don’t drink and drive, don’t speed, take regular breaks, wear your seatbelt, and be aware of your surroundings whilst travelling this weekend," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

More than 83,000 breath tests have been conducted with 88 drink drivers charged. At the same time in 2016, more than 100,000 breath tests were conducted with 213 people charged.

Across the state there have been more than 149 major crashes with 59 people injured.
