Motorists warned to slow down through roadworks – Huon Highway in Kingston, TAS

More than 40 motorists were caught speeding during a 3 hour traffic operation over two days at a temporary roadworks site located on Huon Highway in Kingston, Tasmania Police say.

Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said that the police operation – which was held for the past two days- resulted from a complaint from a member of the public about motorists failing to comply with the speed restrictions in place.

"A member of the public raised concerns about some motorists not obeying the speed limit, therefore putting those motorists who were doing the right thing at risk," Acting Inspector Mathewson said.

"Members of Southern Road and Public Order Services conducted a traffic operation for a total of 3 hours over two days, where more than 40 motorists were caught speeding through the roadworks zone. As a result those motorists will receive an infringement notice for speeding."

Acting Inspector Mathewson said he was disappointed with the results, saying that the speed restrictions in roadworks sites were in place to make the area safer for both the workers in the area as well as motorists.

"This is a disappointing result having regard to the Road Safety Advisory Council’s Your Speed Is Our Safety campaign linked to roadworks sites," said Acting Inspector Mathewson.

"Not only is this behaviour potentially dangerous to the roadworks and other road users, it often causes damage to the roadworks and extends work periods in those areas.

"Motorists are reminded to always obey speed limits in roadworks sites – it’s for their safety and the safety of road workers."
