One of Central Queensland's longest-running events, the Golden Mount Festival, returns this weekend, shining a spotlight on Mount Morgan's rich gold rush history.
Expected to attract up to 2,000 people, the festival is celebrating its 49th year this weekend.
Deputy Mayor and Communities, Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council was proud to support this year's event with a $15,000 grant through the Community Assistance Program.
"The Golden Mount Festival is something the community is really proud of, and we as a Council are proud to be able to support it through the Community Assistance Program," Cr Wickerson said.
"The Golden Mount Festival came about to celebrate Mount Morgan's mining history with events such as Running of the Cutter and the Gold Dig, and it's wonderful that in 2026, gold mining is planned to restart in the town to keep the story alive."
Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Golden Mount Festival was a pinnacle event on the Mount Morgan calendar.
"This is an event our community and wider region look forward to every year," Cr Rutherford said.
"Not only does it bring everyone together, but it also celebrates the rich history that we are so proud of.
"The four-day event has something for everyone, from the Friday night barbecue, outdoor movie and fireworks to the main event on Saturday with markets, kids amusements, the gold digs, Running the Cutter and procession."
Golden Mount Festival President Gavin Finch said the event has been running since 1977 and celebrates the town's "golden heritage".
"This event is the cornerstone of the Mount Morgan community. It provides important social opportunities, generates revenue for local businesses and is inherent to the town's identity," Mr Finch said.
"External funding is vital to the survival and success of the Golden Mount Festival. Without Council's sponsorship, there may not be a festival.
"We are very grateful for Council's investment in this long-running community event."
The Golden Mount Festival begins on Friday, 1 May and runs until Monday, 4 May.
