Mower Donation Keeps Club Kicking Goals

Townsville City Council is helping a family football club kick goals with the donation of a Kubota lawn mower.

The donation to Annandale-based football club MA Olympic came after the club was targeted in late May, with their Kubota and Ferris lawn mowers stolen during two brazen break ins.

When the news hit Council, staff members knew it was time to step up by donating a lawn mower from its outgoing fleet collection.

MA Olympic Football Club vice president Theo Nicopoulos said the donation was beyond the club's expectations.

"The kindness and the generosity of the council to get on board and help us keep the club running, it's huge for us. It helps us financially and the main thing is it keeps the kids on the park and keeps the season continuing," Mr Nicopoulos said.

"There's a lot of grass to mow here. It's a five- or six-hour job, and that's with two mowers. It is a big task, it takes a lot of our own time to do it. With the generosity of this new mower, it's a lot bigger than what we had so it will help us cut down those hours a bit as well.

"If you can't cut the grass, the kids can't play. We're really grateful for the generosity of this donation of the council, and we're looking forward to using it soon."

Mr Nicopoulos said Ausfield Services, Get Mowed, Your Mate With a Mower and Grasswork Lawn Care all chipped in to help keep the fields in mint condition for home games and training for the past three weeks.

"The outreach from the community has been fantastic, we've had four businesses come and help us mow for the last couple of weeks off their own bat. It's been fantastic for the club to keep the kids on the park," he said.

Townsville Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the donation was "a no-brainer" for Council.

"I'd like to congratulate the Townsville City Council staff that came forward with this initiative. It's a great thing for us to do for our community," Cr Greaney said.

"As a former soccer mum I understand the time and effort that presidents, vice presidents, the people who run the canteen, that goes into sporting organisations like this, so I'm very pleased that we're able to donate this lawnmower."
