National Junior Doctor of Year awarded to Territory Physician

Minster for Health Natasha Fyles has congratulated Territory Doctor, Dr Joseph Sanjay on being awarded the Northern Territory Junior Doctor of the Year and the Australian Junior Doctor of Year 2019 at the National Prevocational Medical Education Forum in Canberra.

Dr Joseph was commended for his passion and dedication to rural and remote medicine, the continuous improvement of prevocational medical education and training in the NT and his commitment to promoting junior doctor health and wellbeing to executive staff and medical students across Top End Health Service.

Since commencing the NT Medical Program in 2012, Dr Joseph has demonstrated his passion and commitment to working in and around the NT. He started his internship in 2018 as one of the first cohorts of interns to rotate through Katherine District Hospital, focusing on general medicine and emergency medical care.

Currently, Dr Joseph is a postgraduate year two resident medical officer at Royal Darwin Hospital where his clinical skills are not only impressive, but he demonstrates support to other junior doctors.

Dr Joseph has also been active in the orientation of junior staff at the Territory Labor Government's Palmerston Regional Hospital where he set up an orientation program for all incoming junior doctors.

Dr Joseph is planning to commence the Basic Physicians Training (BPT) Program and hopes to remain in the Territory during this time of specialty training as he aims to continually support the NT health community as part of his medical career.

As stated by the Minister for Health, Natasha Fyles:

"We have fantastic doctors in the Territory – and I congratulate Dr Joseph on both his awards.

"He is a role model not only in the Territory but in the Australian medical field. Dr Joseph is an inspiration - mentoring peers; setting up orientation programs; making sure our junior doctors' wellbeing and skills are grown and working with newly arrived refugees.

"The Territory is a developing medical hub, and with physicians like Dr Joseph we will be able to continue to grow."
