Nearly 1,000 drivers booked for school-zone offences in one day, NSW

Officers from the State’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command issued 996 tickets for school zone offences, including one teenage driver who was caught driving at 108km/h in a 40kmh school zone with an 8-year-old student in the car, NSW Police say.

The infringements were issued during Operation Compliance 5 which ran yesterday, targeting dangerous driver behaviour, especially around school zones and mobile phone use.

The operation was run in order to combat the mounting road toll which currently sits at 356.

During the operation, officers continued to see people disobeying the law around school zones, with officers issuing 996 infringements for offences around school zones, 893 for mobile phone use, 101 for not keeping left and 419 vehicle defects.

In one incident, officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol detected a Holden Commodore travelling at 108km/h in a 40km/h school zone on Hope Street, Ermington.

The car was stopped and the driver, a 17-year-old boy who is a P1 provisional licence holder, was spoken to. Also in the car was another teenage boy and an 8-year-old boy.

The driver had his license suspended on the spot and was issued infringements for exceed speed by more than 45km/h in school zone, use vehicle with smooth tyres, and was issued a defect notice.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the State’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said that it is not fair to put innocent children at risk.

"Recently we have seen too many people drink-driving, speeding, or using phones in cars in cars with children as passengers.

"We have also seen too many people driving dangerously around school zones.

"To think that children, who are innocent bystanders or passengers in cars, could be killed because of someone else’s stupid behaviour is beyond comprehension," Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said.
