Neighbourly way to hunt for bargains

More than 100 homes across the Cairns region will offer up pre-loved items for sale as part of Cairns' Biggest Garage Sale this weekend.

Bargain-hunters are invited to shop 'til they drop between 8am and 2pm this Saturday 30 March, with garage sales being held in more than 30 suburbs.

Deputy Mayor Terry James said the aim of the day was to encourage neighbourly interaction while promoting reuse of pre-loved items.

"A garage sale is a great way to get to know your neighbours," Cr James said. "Plus, you can get rid of items you no longer need but which might useful to someone else.

"We have more than 100 garage sales registered from Babinda to Palm Cove," Cr James said. "Bentley Park, Smithfield, Earlville, Redlynch and Edmonton are the suburbs with the most garage sales registered.

"Council has provided Biggest Garage Sale signage for participants to help advertise the garage sales, so keep an eye out for the signs when you're out and about."

Cairns' Biggest Garage Sale is part of Neighbour Day, which celebrates the benefits that come from being part of a neighbourhood. The theme for Neighbour Day 2019 is Loneliness: what neighbours can do to create connections.

"Knowing our neighbours can help us to feel safer and more connected in our communities and can improve our wellbeing," Cr James said. "If you don't know your neighbours, Neighbour Day is the perfect opportunity to get out and say 'hi'.

"A great neighbourhood is one that is caring, cohesive, safe, and welcoming. Having good neighbours can make a big difference to our lives and goes a long way to creating a happy, healthy and peaceful environment for all."
