The Andrews Labor Government today announced the appointment of barrister Simon McGregor as a new coroner of the Coroners Court of Victoria.
Mr McGregor has an extensive legal career spanning 24 years after being admitted to practice in 1994 and becoming a member of the Victorian Bar in 1997.
He has appeared in a range of matters, including the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and as counsel assisting the Coroner in a number of inquests, including deaths in custody.
Mr McGregor has also appeared before the Court of Appeal, Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts in a variety of matters, including administrative law, professional negligence and personal injury law, as well as human rights, discrimination and commercial law.
He has been a member of the Common Law Bar Association Committee since 1998 and a Co-convenor of the Victorian Bar Charter of Human Rights Discussion Group since 2007.
Mr McGregor is also a member of the Law Council of Australia’s Anti-Money Laundering Working Group and both the Supreme and County Court’s Confiscation List Users Group.
Additionally, he has also assisted in the development of law reform, as well as in-house legal training for both commercial and legal organisations, and commercial and not-for-profit sector transactions.
Mr McGregor has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University.
He will replace Coroner Peter White who has served as a coroner for the past 13 years and is due to retire in November 2018.
