New Assistant Commissioner appointed, TAS

Western District Commander Jonathan Higgins has been appointed as the new Assistant Commissioner at Tasmania Police, Tasmania Police say.

Commissioner Darren Hine said that Assistant Commissioner Higgins, 44, who joined Tasmania Police in 1999, had demonstrated outstanding communication skills, the ability to motivate and lead others, implement change, and a clear vision for the future.

"Jonathan’s vision is to recognise, build and support people across the organisation and the crucial work they do by providing strategic leadership in this senior role," said Mr Hine.

As Assistant Commissioner, Mr Higgins will take on the portfolio of Specialist Support, which is responsible for the commands of Operations Support, Marine and Rescue, Special Response and Counter-Terrorism and Education and Training.

He brings to the role more than 20 years of experience with Tasmania Police, the last 12 months as Commander of the Western District.

Previous roles include heading up the creation of People and Culture within the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management and Launceston Criminal Investigation Branch.

Assistant Commissioner Higgins holds a number of academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Arts with Professional Honours (Leadership and Public Sector Management) 2016 from the University of Tasmania, and has secondary roles within the Australia and New Zealand Counter Terrorism Committee.

"I’m privileged to be appointed to the role," said Assistant Commissioner Higgins.

"It’s an honour to represent Tasmania Police. I have great pride in this organisation and my passion for policing is a key part of my leadership style," he said.

Mr Hine said that Assistant Commissioner Higgins’ outstanding skills in strategic leadership would build a culture of collaboration and capability across Tasmania Police.

"I congratulate him on his appointment," said Mr Hine.

Assistant Commissioner Higgins’ appointment is effective from today.
