The Greek-Australian community in Oakleigh, and its contribution towards Monash life, has been acknowledged in a recently released book, produced by History Monash with the assistance of a City of Monash Community Grant.
Oakleigh is Our Life: Greek Settlement in Oakleigh, written by History Monash secretary Ann Nield, explores when and why migrants from Greece settled in Oakleigh, and how they developed such a strong community, preserving their language, religion and culture.
The book highlights the courage of those who came to Australia from the other side of the world to start a new life and helps others to understand their experiences.
Drawing upon interviews with families of Greek descent, the book blends their stories with social trends, as well as recent studies and new research.
