The City of Launceston has voted in support of a new Flying of Flags policy which will guide how flags are flown at Council facilities.
The policy outlines the circumstances in which flags are to be flown at half-mast, where flags are flown, and in what order.
It will also see the Aboriginal flag flown permanently alongside the Australian flag on the Town Hall and Albert Hall.
The new policy will pave the way for planning applications to be lodged in order to allow additional flagpoles on the roofs of both buildings.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said he was pleased the new policy had been supported unanimously.
"While the new Flying of Flags policy guides the way flags are flown across various Council facilities, it will also see the Aboriginal flag flown permanently alongside the Australian flag on the roofs of the Town Hall and the Albert Hall," Mayor van Zetten said.
"The City of Launceston is committed to recognising and respecting our indigenous history and culture. This is another step in that process.
"It's an important move for Launceston, and I look forward to the relevant planning applications being lodged in the near future."
