New information provided to police Steele murder investigation

New information has been provided to police regarding the murder of Donna Steele following the Police Minister’s announcement last week of a $250,000 reward leading to the identification and conviction of the person or people responsible for her murder., Queensland Police say

Homicide Investigation Unit Detective Inspector Damien Hansen said police believe the person responsible for Ms Steele’s murder is not a resident of Cooktown.

"We believe that the person responsible may have been travelling through Cooktown and may have come from as far away as Cairns," Detective Inspector Hansen said.

"As such, we are appealing for anyone who was in the Cooktown area on August 2 to make contact with investigators through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"We believe that people in Cooktown have knowledge and are covering for that person.

"What I say to these people is: it’s never too late to come forward and do the right thing. There are two young boys growing up without their mother – help these boys get justice for her.

"Please come forward. Police will take you seriously and you will be supported through the process."

On August 6 last year, Ms Steele’s body was located in the Endeavour River in Cooktown.

The $250,000 reward is offered for information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or people responsible for her murder.

In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information.
