New leader strengthens northern cropping research

The northern cropping region will benefit from the appointment of a new crop research leader, based at the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Tamworth Agricultural Institute. DPI’s Director of Northern Cropping Systems, Dr Guy McMullen congratulated Dr Georgina Pengilley on her recent appointment.

"Dr Pengilley has a strong agricultural background with a diverse range of research and development experience," Dr McMullen said.

"This lead role will strengthen DPI’s research and development capability and collaboration with industry stakeholders including the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

"In her role as Leader Crop Genetics and Market Access, Dr Pengilley will focus on pulse and cereal breeding, coupled with improvements in cereal and pulse quality and functionality."

Dr Pengilley previous worked as the Leader Grains Research and Strategy with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), where she led the development, implementation and completion of research and development programs including salinity, acidity, waterlogging and boron stress tolerance in cereals, crop and farming systems modelling, irrigation and subsoil constraints research and management.

She has also undertaken agronomic and breeding research in alkaloid poppies in Tasmania. Dr Pengilley has a Degree in Rural Science (Hons) in 2000 and a PhD in 2004 and is from an 8,300 hectares crops and livestock family farm.
