One of the Sunshine Coast's most anticipated pieces of recreational infrastructure has already proven its popularity, with the community making great use of the new $2 million boardwalk at Mooloolaba after it was opened this morning.
The unveiling of the 3.4m wide boardwalk follows the official opening of the new $5.15 million Mooloolaba Walk and Ride Bridge last week and the recent announcement that council will invest $3.5 million into upgrading the Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park next year.
The completely new wider boardwalk was constructed using durable, long-lasting composite materials, along with aluminium and stainless steel, as a sustainable option to replace the deteriorating timber.
The upgrade included new lighting, improved beach access points including seating and viewing platforms along the route, and up to 10,000 new native plants to revegetate surrounding dunes.
Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said the upgrade was one of many Mooloolaba infrastructure projects council was investing in to create a world-class destination for our residents and visitors to enjoy.
"As well as being a necessary replacement, this upgrade to the much-loved boardwalk helps cater for the increasing number of people in our healthy, smart, creative community who use it for walking and running at all times of the day," Cr Connolly said.
"This upgrade has transformed what is a favourite route for many people who love to walk and run in Mooloolaba, be they residents or visitors.
"I have no doubt it will be put to very good use over summer and well into the future."
Located east of Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park, the upgraded boardwalk provides improved access along the route to Mooloolaba Spit.
The existing boardwalk was constructed 20 years ago and, after years of heavy use from residents and visitors, it needed renewal.
The northern concrete section of pathway adjoining the boardwalk will be upgraded in 2019, starting in July, and will complete the upgrade of this popular route.
The boardwalk renewal was a joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.
