The Australian Government has delivered on new moorings for Flying Fish Cove and Smith Point, supporting critical supply chains, tourism, and economic opportunities for Christmas Island.
The $18.8 million federal investment in this vital project has improved safety, access and capacity for vessels, as well enhancing the island's economic sustainability.
The project, which commenced in 2022, involved updating and replacing the Flying Fish Cove and Smith Point Mooring systems, as well as removing the defunct system at Nui Nui/ Norris Point.
The Christmas Island port is exceptionally deep and one of the most challenging ports in the world with its conditions, making this a complex project. It required the support and expertise of local and international teams, with LINX Port Services leading the works in the face of some difficult logistics and weather impacts.
The replacement of the mooring systems demonstrates the Australian Government's commitment to support the economic future of Christmas Island, ensuring the island has the port infrastructure it needs to grow.
Investigations are also continuing into options for repair and upgrade of waterfront infrastructure at Flying Fish Cove, while remediation and protection works continue, to address earlier damage from extreme weather impacts.
