The awards replace the previous Australia Day Community Awards. A Citizenship Ceremony and flag-raising ceremony celebrating Nillumbik's newest Australians will continue to be held on 26 January.

Council formally endorsed the Nillumbik Community Awards at tonight's Council Meeting.

Mayor Frances Eyre said the awards would a stand-alone event to honour and celebrate Nillumbik's "community champions".

"We have so many exceptionally talented, dedicated and generous individuals and groups who deserve to be recognised for the amazing things they do for our community," Cr Eyre said.

"We hope that holding the ceremony in August will give the awards a greater presence in our community, raising its profile and providing a greater opportunity outside the busy summer holiday season for people to nominate deserving individuals and groups and attend the event."

Nominations for the Nillumbik Community Awards will open in 2023.
