Canungra’s long-awaited new treatment plant is fully operational, producing almost four times more drinking water for the local community.
Acting Natural Resources Minister Mark Furner said the $4 million plant would cater for future increased water demand for the growing Canungra community. had been built in line with Seqwater’s 30-year water plan for South East Queensland.
"The new plant will be able to produce 1.5 million litres of treated drinking water each day, which is almost four times the production capability of the old plant, ensuring we can meet the community’s future water needs," Mr Furner said
"The previous water treatment plant had been operating for almost 50 years and some of its structural components had reached the end of their service life."
Scenic Rim Regional Council Mayor Greg Christensen and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West today joined Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan to officially open and tour the new treatment plant.
Construction involved progressively decommissioning and removing existing structural components of the old plant as well as installing the new facility.
Cr Christensen said the new plant would be essential to supporting the community and local businesses into the future with Canungra’s population expected to more than triple to 3000 people over the next 20 years.
"A secure and reliable water supply is critical to Canungra’s continued prosperity and the health of its residents and environment," Cr Christensen said.
"This project complements Seqwater’s plans to connect Beaudesert and Wyaralong Dam to the SEQ Water Grid for the first time to ensure the future water supply security for the Scenic Rim.
The Canungra Water Treatment Plant is a stand-alone water supply system providing water to the township of Canungra and Maurita Crescent. The network also includes several Queensland Urban Utilities–owned reservoirs located at Appel Street and Maurita Crescent.
