New Rural Crime Investigator, NSW

Barrier Local Area Command has a new Rural Crime Investigator, who will based in Broken Hill, NSW Police say.

Barrier Local Area Commander, Superintendent Paul Smith, welcomes Detective Senior Constable Danny Crowley to the position of Rural Crime Investigator Broken Hill.

"Danny will join Detective Senior Constable Daryl Olver, who is based at Dareton and – until now – was the sole Rural Crime Investigator for the command," Supt Smith said.

"This position will greatly assist us in policing our rural and remote communities across the vast command that encompasses the Local Government Areas of Broken Hill, Central Darling and Wentworth, along with the unincorporated lands.

"These two detectives are not only experienced investigators but have vast local knowledge and specialised rural industry knowledge and skill. Having two specialised investigators working in with rural communities and industry combating rural crime is a major positive for the Far West," Supt Smith said.

There are now 34 Rural Crime Investigators based around rural NSW; they focus on:

• The professional investigation of rural crime;

• Collecting rural crime intelligence;

• Providing a multi-agency approach to detect and prevent rural crime;

• Monitoring transported stock, sale yards, abattoirs, wool hide and skin dealers, rural clearing sales and stock and station agents;

• Educating other operational police on rural issues;

• Providing the rural community with effective crime prevention strategies.

Western Region Commander and corporate spokesperson for rural crime, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie, APM, Commander said the NSW Police Force is committed to reducing the impact of rural crime.

"We will maintain the existing good working relationships with partner agencies and individual members of the community to reduce crime and to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations relating to agriculture and pastoral industries.

"I am confident that through these partnerships we can make a positive contribution to the safety and security of rural communities," Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
