New Year's Eve wrap-up, South Australia

The majority of New Year's Eve crowds were generally well-behaved, with large crowds enjoying the festivities at locations such as Glenelg, Semaphore, Victor Harbor and in Adelaide with the Big Bash cricket and fireworks in Elder Park.

About 41,000 people attended the Big Bash cricket at Adelaide Oval and over 35,000 watched the fireworks displays at Elder Park.

Between 7.30pm on New Year's Eve and 7am on New Year's morning, there were 109 arrests, 16 reports and 117 general expiation notices issued for a range of offences including behavioural and street offences, possession of drugs, and for consuming alcohol in dry zones.

Police arrested one man and fined two others for behavioural offences at the cricket at Adelaide Oval.

On New Year's Eve, Assistant Commissioner Scott Duval informed the public that police would use authorities provided under the Declared Public Precincts, to ensure the safety of those celebrating the night.

While an increase was seen in the number of arrests compared to last year, police remain pleased with crowd behaviour given the number of people enjoying the New Year's celebrations around the state.

Officers from Traffic Support Branch conducted a major state-wide traffic operation aimed at eliminating fatalities and reducing the likelihood of serious injury crashes.

Almost 6000 tests were conducted with 45 people returning a positive result to alcohol. Police also conducted over 300 drug tests with 21 people returning positive samples.

The highest recorded reading was from a 20-year-old motorcyclist, who recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.186 about 6pm on December 31 at Port Lincoln. Police checks revealed the male rider had never held a licence, was currently disqualified from driving and the motorcycle was unregistered and uninsured, and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

A 27-year-old Prospect man recorded a breath test reading of 0.166 at a Semaphore Road, Semaphore driver testing site yesterday evening.

Police want to remind the public that alcohol and other substances can stay in your system for a long time after you consume them, so remember that police will continue to be out and about conducting random driver testing during New Year's Day.

In another incident of note, just before 1am, a police officer was struck by a Mazda sedan at a driver testing station on Henley Beach Road at Mile End. The sedan then drove away from the scene. The male officer sustained minor leg injuries and was treated in hospital, and was later released.

Major Crash officers are investigating the collision, and following positive lines of enquiry with the registered owner.

Police appeal for the driver and any witnesses to come forward to assist the investigation.
