Newcastle Gallery Unveils Landmark Redevelopment

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Newcastle Art Gallery has offered the community an early glimpse of the city's cultural future, unveiling the first new spaces in its $47 million transformation.

The expansion has been made possible by a $24 million investment from the City of Newcastle, $13 million from the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation and $5 million in funding each from the Australian and NSW governments.

These newly unveiled exhibition spaces will allow the gallery to showcase more of its vast collection, while the new gallery shop will give visitors the chance to take home a memento of Newcastle's vibrant art scene.

When complete, the transformation will more than double the gallery's floor space, providing upgraded exhibition areas, improved visitor access and modern facilities including a café and terrace and multi-purpose program spaces.

As Australia's first purpose-built regional art gallery, officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, the gallery holds one of the most valuable public art collections in Australia outside of a capital city - with more than 7,000 works valued at $145 million.

The redevelopment also gives the gallery the infrastructure needed to host world-class exhibitions, with a secure international museum-standard loading dock, along with sustainability upgrades such as advanced ventilation, high-performance window glazing, LED exhibition lighting and rooftop solar panels.

The completed Newcastle Art Gallery expansion project will officially open in early 2026.
