Newest arrivals in spotlight

The Cairns region's youngest residents will have their moment in the spotlight this weekend when Cairns Regional Council holds its annual Baby Welcoming Ceremony.

Babies born from September 2018 to October 2019 will tomorrow (26 October) be formally welcomed into the Cairns community by Mayoress Claire Manning, who will present each baby and their family a special commemorative certificate.

Now in its 10th year, a whopping 240 babies have been registered for Saturday's ceremony, including two sets of twins, an increase of more than 60 on last year's event.

"The boom in numbers shows growing interest for this special ceremony, which creates many wonderful memories," Mrs Manning said.

"This ceremony has become a milestone event for parents of new babies; it's a special occasion for family and friends to share."

The event will be held in the Civic Reception Rooms at Cairns Regional Council on Saturday 26 October from 9m to 1pm and split into several sessions.

A native tree will be planted in Redlynch in celebration of each baby.

There will plenty of activities for the younger members of the family to enjoy, including face painting, a library corner, major sponsor Playgroup Queensland will host toy library, and lucky dip prizes to be won.
