Newport truck driver over limit

Police have prevented a tragedy waiting to happen after they intercepted a truck in St Kilda Sunday afternoon.

Police were initially called after a truck was seen driving erratically on the Westgate Freeway about 2.40pm.

Police will allege they observed the vehicle driving erratically on Ferrars Street in Middle Park when the driver failed to stop when he was signalled to do so by Police.

St Kilda police members intercepted the truck which had stopped on Canterbury Road about 2.50pm.

The driver, a 26-year-old Newport man, was taken to a local police station where he returned a positive evidentiary breath test of 0.240.

His license was immediately suspended, and he is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and other driving offences.

The truck was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $2601.
