No place for complacency with COVID

Tasmanian Labor
  • New COVID-19 case highlights need for vigilance
  • Government's own committee calling for plan to manage new cases
  • Lessons from North West Outbreak must be learned
  • The latest case of COVID-19 in Tasmania is a reminder that the virus remains a constant threat to the community.

Shadow Minister for Health Sarah Lovell extended her sympathies to the man and his family and wished him a speedy recovery.

"After so long with no active cases, yesterday's news has shocked everyone back to the reality that COVID-19 remains a threat to our community.

"We acknowledge the staff at the North West Regional Hospital, who have responded quickly to this emergency.

"This latest case highlights the need for Premier Peter Gutwein to outline his plan to manage future outbreaks.

"The Premier's own Economic and Social Recovery Advisory Council has identified this as a priority action in its interim report but so far Peter Gutwein has failed to deliver.

"It's time he outlined his plan so that Tasmanians know their sacrifices over the past few months have not been in vain."

Ms Lovell also reiterated Labor's calls to tighten the essential worker exemption program, fix ongoing problems with the G2G (Good to Go) pass and address concerns about bus transport to quarantine hotels.

"Tasmanians have been raising concerns with us for weeks about gaps in the system and Labor has been arguing for loopholes in border and quarantine processes to be closed.

"We already know essential worker exemptions are being granted where skills would be readily available in Tasmania.

"Labor will continue to argue strongly for processes that protect Tasmanians' health and jobs."
