No timeline for police house upgrades

Tasmanian Labor

Minister for Police Jacquie Petrusma failed to commit to a timeline on when police houses will receive vital security upgrades during Budget Estimates today.

Shadow Minister for Police Michelle O'Byrne said it was crucial all police houses were installed with appropriate security measures as soon as possible.

"Police living in rural and remote communities across Tasmania need to feel they and their families are safe," Ms O'Byrne said.

"A range of security measures are desperately needed, including things such as CCTV and security doors that will help protect police without having a negative impact on their homes.

"In May this year an off-duty police officer and his wife were assaulted on their property and it is important that this does not happen again."

Ms O'Byrne said it was all well and good to identify an issue but a timeline is needed to ensure police officers and their families remain safe.

"Police deserve to feel safe and upgrading their homes with increased security measures will provide a pathway to this.

"A timeline for the upgrade of the homes is necessary to ensure these safety upgrades occur in a timely manner and the Minister should commit to it."
